Fashion design creates the clothes; fashion merchandising decides what gets made, bought, priced and sold. Here are the jobs on both sides and what they pay, using 2024 federal wage data.

Quick answer

Fashion majors work as designers, buyers, planners, visual merchandisers, sales reps and marketers. BLS reports a median of $80,690 for fashion designers and $75,650 for buyers and purchasing agents. Design jobs are few and competitive (about 20,910 nationwide), so merchandising and business skills widen the options.

Fashion programs usually split into two tracks. Fashion design teaches sketching, patternmaking, sewing and building a collection. Fashion merchandising is closer to business: buying, product planning, pricing, retail and marketing.

Both tracks lead into the same industry but different jobs. Below we cover each, what it pays, and what parents should know about how competitive design work is.

What Jobs Can You Get With a Fashion Design Degree?

Pay figures are national medians (the middle wage, not the average) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2024. Half of workers earn more and half earn less. Our calculators and Continuum chart use BLS averages (means), which are usually higher, so their numbers may not match these.

1. Fashion Designer

Creates clothing, shoes or accessories for brands and retailers, from concept to production. BLS: median $80,690 (middle half earns $53,730–$107,990). BLS counts only about 20,910 fashion designers nationwide, and many are in New York and California.

2. Technical Designer or Patternmaker

Turns designs into exact patterns and fit specs for factories. BLS doesn't publish one figure that matches this role well, so we don't quote one.

3. Costume or Set Designer

Designs costumes for theater, film and TV. BLS set and exhibit designers earn a median $66,280.

4. Graphic or Textile Designer

Creates prints, patterns, logos and marketing art. BLS graphic designers earn a median $61,300.

What Jobs Can You Get With a Fashion Merchandising Degree?

Merchandising grads have more job openings to choose from, because every retailer and brand needs buyers, planners and marketers.

5. Buyer or Assistant Buyer

Chooses what a store or brand will stock and negotiates with vendors. BLS buyers and purchasing agents earn a median $75,650 ($58,670–$99,190).

6. Visual Merchandiser

Designs store displays and windows. BLS merchandise displayers and window trimmers earn a median $37,350, so this is usually a starting role.

7. Wholesale or Showroom Sales

Sells a brand's line to stores. BLS wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives earn a median $66,780, often with commission.

8. Retail Store Management

Many merchandising grads start in store leadership. BLS first-line supervisors of retail sales workers earn a median $47,320; district and corporate roles pay more.

9. Fashion Marketing Manager

Leads brand, product and e-commerce marketing. BLS marketing managers earn a median $161,030, usually after years of experience.

What Do Fashion Majors Study?

Design tracks cover drawing and fashion illustration, patternmaking, draping, sewing and construction, textiles, computer-aided design and a senior collection. Merchandising tracks cover textiles, retail math, buying and planning, product development, visual merchandising, consumer behavior and fashion marketing. Both build in internships, and a design portfolio matters a lot for jobs.

Is Fashion Merchandising a Good Major?

MajorMatch's Fashion Design & Merchandising Loan vs Upside calculator starts from Continuum wages of about $52,000 early-career and $91,000 mid-career. At its default $50,000 loan (6.5% for 10 years), total repayment is about $68,129, against an estimated lifetime earnings gain of about $457,972 over a high-school-only path, about 6.7 times the loan cost. It is an illustration, not a promise, and you can change every input.

Early-career fashion pay is close to the high-school baseline, and design jobs are concentrated in a few expensive cities. The degree pays off best when the cost is kept low and your teen builds business skills (buying, planning, data, marketing) alongside the creative ones. Borrowing heavily for a private fashion school is hard to justify on these numbers.

How Will AI Affect Fashion Careers?

MajorMatch's AI-Proof Career Check (part of the assessment results) estimates what share of a job's tasks AI tools could significantly speed up or automate. It measures exposure, not a forecast of job loss. Fashion design and merchandising scores 46% overall. Fashion designers are at 38%, buyers 43%, visual merchandisers 29%, marketing managers 54%, and wholesale sales reps 66%. AI can already speed up concept art, product descriptions and sales paperwork. Building patterns and samples, working with a design team, arranging displays and managing people stay human.

Is Fashion the Right Major for Your Teen?

Fashion design fits students who already sketch, sew or style and can take blunt critique. Merchandising fits students who love fashion but also like numbers, trends and business. If your teen's interest is mostly visual, compare graphic design; if it is mostly business, compare marketing. The free MajorMatch assessment uses our own proprietary scoring method to compare your student's strengths and interests with all 100 majors, including fashion design and merchandising, and shows their top 3 for free.
