Is Game Design a Good Major? What Graduates Do and What They Earn

Game design blends art, storytelling and programming. The pay can be strong, but the industry is competitive and highly exposed to AI tools. Here is the honest picture, using 2024 federal wage data.

Quick answer

Game design can be a good major for students who build games on their own and pick a strong technical or art specialty. BLS reports a median of $99,800 for special effects artists and animators and $133,080 for software developers. It is also one of the most AI-exposed majors in our catalog (60%), and studio jobs are competitive.

Many teens who love playing games want to make them. Game design programs teach how games are built: rules and mechanics, levels, art, sound, code and testing. Most students specialize in design, programming or art.

The specialty matters for jobs and pay. Below are the main paths, what they pay, and what parents should know about competition and AI before saying yes.

What Jobs Can You Get With a Game Design Degree?

Pay figures are national medians (the middle wage, not the average) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2024. Half of workers earn more and half earn less. Our calculators and Continuum chart use BLS averages (means), which are usually higher, so their numbers may not match these.

BLS doesn't track "game designer" as its own job, so we use the closest federal categories.

1. Game Designer or Level Designer

Designs the rules, levels, missions and systems players experience. The closest BLS category, web and digital interface designers, earns a median $98,090 (middle half earns $64,990–$141,860).

2. Game Programmer

Writes the code that makes games run, from physics to multiplayer. BLS software developers earn a median $133,080. This is the best-paid path, and it needs real computer science skills; see our computer science guide.

3. 3D Artist or Animator

Creates characters, environments and animation. BLS special effects artists and animators earn a median $99,800 ($73,030–$135,600).

4. UX or Interface Designer

Designs menus, controls and screens, in games or in apps and websites. Same BLS category as #1. The skills transfer well outside games.

5. Producer

Manages schedules, budgets and teams. BLS producers and directors earn a median $83,480.

6. Graphic or Marketing Artist

Makes game art for stores, trailers and ads. BLS graphic designers earn a median $61,300.

7. Quality Assurance Tester

Finds bugs before release. It is a common entry point, but BLS doesn't publish a separate wage for it, and many QA jobs are contract work.

What Do Game Design Majors Study?

Expect game design theory, level design, prototyping, game engines such as Unity or Unreal, programming, 2D and 3D art, animation, narrative and sound, and team projects that ship a playable game. Programs vary a lot: some sit in computer science departments and are heavy on code, others sit in art schools. Look at student portfolios and where graduates work before choosing a program.

Is a Game Design Degree Worth It?

MajorMatch's Game Design Loan vs Upside calculator starts from Continuum wages of about $73,000 early-career and $144,000 mid-career. At its default $50,000 loan (6.5% for 10 years), total repayment is about $68,129, against an estimated lifetime earnings gain of about $2,427,643 over a high-school-only path, about 35.6 times the loan cost. It is an illustration, not a promise, and you can change every input.

Those Continuum wages reflect the software and digital-design jobs game design majors often land in, not only jobs at game studios. Studio work is competitive and has had waves of layoffs. A degree that includes real programming or strong 3D art, plus a portfolio of finished games, gives your teen options inside and outside the game industry.

How Will AI Affect Game Design Careers?

MajorMatch's AI-Proof Career Check (part of the assessment results) estimates what share of a job's tasks AI tools could significantly speed up or automate. It measures exposure, not a forecast of job loss. Game design scores 60% overall, tied for 10th highest of the 100 majors in our catalog: web and digital interface designers 69% and special effects artists and animators 50%. AI tools can already generate art, code and design variations. Building and installing physical effects and the hands-on parts of production stay human, and so does deciding what makes a game fun. Students should learn to use AI tools as part of their workflow and build skills AI can't easily copy, such as systems design and leading a team.

Is Game Design the Right Major for Your Teen?

Game design fits students who already make things: mods, levels, art, code or small games, and finish them. If your teen mostly enjoys playing, that is a weaker signal. Students who like the coding side should compare computer science; those who like the art side can compare graphic design. The free MajorMatch assessment uses our own proprietary scoring method to compare your student's strengths and interests with all 100 majors, including game design, and shows their top 3 for free. Frequently Asked Questions

Do game designers make good money?

Pay depends on specialty. BLS reports a median of $133,080 for software developers, $99,800 for animators and $98,090 for digital interface designers (May 2024). Many studio jobs start lower.

Is it hard to get a job in game design?

Studio jobs are competitive. A strong portfolio of finished projects matters more than grades.

Is game design or computer science better for making games?

Computer science gives more job options and is the standard path for game programmers. Game design is better for students focused on design or art.

Is game design a good major for the future?

The skills transfer to software, apps, simulation and training. It is also among the most AI-exposed majors, so adaptability matters.

Will AI replace game designers?

MajorMatch's AI-Proof Career Check rates game design at 60% task exposure. AI speeds up art and code, but creative direction and team leadership remain human.
