Supply chain management is a business major focused on how goods get from raw materials to a customer's door: buying, planning, warehousing, shipping and the data behind all of it. The shortages and shipping delays of recent years made it a lot more visible.
It is also one of the more direct business majors. The job titles match the coursework, and employers in manufacturing, retail, healthcare and government recruit on campus. Here is what the jobs are and what they pay. For a day-to-day view, see a day in the life of a supply chain manager.
What Entry-Level Jobs Can You Get With a Supply Chain Degree?
Pay figures are national medians (the middle wage, not the average) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2024. Half of workers earn more and half earn less. Our calculators and Continuum chart use BLS averages (means), which are usually higher, so their numbers may not match these.

What Do Supply Chain Majors Study?
Expect the business core (accounting, economics, finance, marketing, statistics) plus courses in operations, purchasing, logistics and transportation, inventory and demand planning, and supply chain analytics. Many programs use the same planning software employers use, and the best ones build in internships or co-ops. Industry certifications from groups like ASCM and ISM are optional and are usually earned after a few years of work.
Is Supply Chain Management a Good Major?
MajorMatch's Supply Chain Management Loan vs Upside calculator starts from Continuum wages of about $75,000 early-career and $125,000 mid-career. At its default $50,000 loan (6.5% for 10 years), total repayment is about $68,129, against an estimated lifetime earnings gain of about $1,792,997 over a high-school-only path, about 26.3 times the loan cost. It is an illustration, not a promise, and you can change every input.
The numbers are strong because supply chain jobs are spread across almost every industry, so graduates are not tied to one employer type or one region. The main tradeoff is lifestyle: some operations jobs involve early shifts, warehouse floors or being on call when shipments go wrong. Analyst and purchasing roles are more of an office job.
How Will AI Affect Supply Chain Careers?
MajorMatch's AI-Proof Career Check (part of the assessment results) estimates what share of a job's tasks AI tools could significantly speed up or automate. It measures exposure, not a forecast of job loss. Supply chain management scores 52% overall: logisticians 56%, and transportation and distribution managers 48%. Data entry, reporting and routine forecasting are the most exposed tasks. Building supplier relationships, deciding where to put people and equipment, and handling problems on the floor stay human. Students who learn the data and AI tools will be the ones supervising them.
